"we just wanted a yard"

When I unexpectedly found myself pregnant in 2007 I remember being horribly depressed that I was going to have a child who had to live in an apartment and not have a yard.

I did not even want to set up his bedroom because I felt like it was inferior.

July 2008 when the kid was 3 months old we moved into a very nice house....3 bedrooms, 2 baths over 1700 square feet, fenced back yard... we moved to a new town with the idea that I would go back to work in August and we would have lots of money to pay the $900 a month rent. We chose this house for the "idea"- a happy family with a garden and fenced back yard for the kids to play... room for family to spend the night...a kitchen to cook in.

Then I went back to work...it sucked...I quit and stayed home for a year. Life was better. I began my frugal adventures...and slowly I learned.

to do coupons, make meals ahead of time, eat out less, buy used, sell things we no longer needed.

We made it, well sort of we racked up debt over that year.

Now I am working again. Full time. and for some reason we seem more poor than when i was not working at all.

So we are working on some big changes based on what we have learned in the last 2 years.

we are moving into an apartment complex with a park. This will save us approximately $400 a month. We considered buying but decided we are not ready for the commitment.

I am consolidating my school loans.

and selling more stuff and making a plan to stay on a food budget again.

because now I realize that time is what I would like to give my children, not stuff.

and you know that fancy backyard we rented this house for...it floods constantly and stays wet for months at a time so we hardly ever play in it.

First fruits of our labor!

We have squash, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, and 4 tomato plants!

This has been a super easy project! Get some containers, make holes in said containers and add potting mix, organic growth feed stuff and plants. Then we watered, and watered and waited and waited. LOL then we got some neat stuff!

Total investment has been around $50 for plants, stakes, food and potting mix. But next year I can reuse the potting mix and I will start early enough to grow my plants from seed. So next years investment will only be a couple of dollars!

PS. this week I spent $61.19 on groceries and got 14 lbs of meat. I blogged about it about my weightloss blog.

Chicken breasts are on sale for $1.77lb this week. I did not feel like messing with the whole dividing packages thing this weekend but I probably will go back on Tuesday before the sale ends and get some and deduct that from next weeks grocery budget.

How to make a RUBBER chicken!

Well not a rubber chicken but how to stretch a chicken regardless!
Yestraday I stumbled on a great deal- Whole Organic chickens marked down for quick sale from $12 a piece to $1.50 each. I bought 2.
Before I went to bed I put the chickens in my crock pot with some random seasonings, salt and pepper and let them cook on low all night.
In the morning I removed the chickens to a large 9X13 pan to cool.

This is the part I hate about rubber chicken...I had to put my hands in to strip the skin off, remove and shred the meat. But from those 2 chickens I got between 2-4 meals worth of cooked chicken to put in my freezer!

Next I took all of the juice and some of the bones, skin ect and put them in a large pot and added water til there was double the amount of liquid in the pot. I added some whole garlic cloves, assorted spices, and half an onion and boiled for an hour. Then I poured the liquid through a mesh strainer. The chicken stock is now cooling on the counter but will go into small zipper freezer bags, a cup each and be frozen.

So for $3 I got 2-4 meals of organic chicken and about 10 cups of chicken stock/broth!

When I first started my own adventures in frugal world it was simply a means to an end. I had a 3 month old and was in my last year of grad school and I did not want to work and put the kid in daycare for 40 hours a week.
So I started super couponing, selling things on ebay, half.com and craigslist, eating out less,buying mostly used...

I read lots of websites and blogs.... sometimes for hours to figure all the steals and deals! I shopped managers specials and clearance racks and stocked up on stuff when it was a good deal.

Slowly though I started to develop a different attitude towards frugalness. By not buying at all I can be frugal and by choosing high quality goods when I do need something I am being more frugal than by choosing cheapies that break in a month. By making do with what I have or finding a good quality used piece I can be frugal and better to the environment.

I then began to read about people who lived "simply", Followed the Compact, or who practised conscious frugality. These ideas make sense to me. Less stuff = more time and more money. Why do I need 25 shirts when 5-10 will do or why does my one year old need 30 different toys??

I started to think about Quality over Quantity.

Slowly I am removing the excess from our life. I still do stock up on some of the best deals (like free shampoo and free toilet paper) but only because we use those things every day. I also still do cut coupons but now I have a list of specific things we use and I watch for just those coupons.

I make meal plans and grocery lists according to the sale ads. We eat meatless 1-3 nights a week and we try to only eat out 1 night a week. I try to feed my family more whole foods and not as much processed foods. I started a garden with squash, basil, cucumbers and tomatoes. I gave up paper towels for the most part and use very basic cleaning supplies like vinegar and baking soda and bleach (one of my guilty pleasures). I try to not purchase plastic because it stays around for a million years and some studies have shown a link between several health issues and plastic. I hang most of our clothes up to dry. I replaced many of the regular bulbs in our house with CFLS. Hubs installed an aerator in the kitchen sink. We own an electric mower and weed eater and we have made a consious effort to reduce our food waste. I try not to go to the dollar store and I strive to buy things made in countries other than China.

Am I perfect?? No and I don't ever plan to be.

Begging or fundraising?

So when did it become socially acceptable to let children beg for money on street corners in America??
I went to old navy this morning and was accosted by not 1 but 3 different groups of children asking for money. Sure 2 of them offered something in return... raffle tickets or chocolate but a chocolate bar or meager chance to win some dumb prize does not sooth my annoyance at being asked for money by children. Of course it was for a "good" cause. Cheer leading camp, dance team, baseball! Since when did it become my responsibility to help your child monetarily to do something you chose??? I am all about helping worthy causes...starving kids, cancer battlers, Jerry's kids....you know VICTIMS, the less fortunate. I don't even mind paying to get my car washed by a group trying to raise some money to go on some big trip or something. But that is where I draw the line. I am so sick of seeing all of these kids made to go up to strangers and beg for money while mommy and daddy sit by and watch. ITS RUDE AND ITS WRONG!

PS I did get some great deals at Old Navy- all of their clearance is an additional 50% off! I got 10 items for hubs and the kid (shirts, hat, pj, jackets, sweaters) for around $12... TOTAL!

Food waste Friday

The tubs contained leftovers from the Kids birthday party and since they sat out a little longer than normal when served I got nervous about eating them closer to the end of the week. Better to waste some food then end up SICK!

I skipped going to the store last week, because we had lots of party leftovers. I was out of fresh fruit and we have a busy weekend planned so I went ahead and went to the store at 10:30 pm!! It was awesome! I score lots of great deals and there was no lines.

I got all this for under $50! Gotta love coupons and manager specials!

Upping my grocery budget/Kroger Visit

I have decided to raise my grocery budget to $70 a week. The kid is eating more and more and I try to feed him some/most ??? well ok as much as possible organic foods and I am attempting to feed us healthier ie more fresh less processed foods.

Today I spent just about right at $70- groceries were $64.43 and I also bought 4 papers at walgreens- $5.

***The kids birthday is this week and I am doing a seperate shopping trip for that and I will not be counting that in my regular grocery budget. ****

I forgot milk and they were out of lettuce, so I will be over budget by $4 but I bought a lot of meat to go in the freezer so it should even out next week.

Frugal Vacation Tips

We just got back from a 3 day vacation to Shreveport LA. WE had a great time and got some great deals along the way!

My top 8 travel tips

travel during the week instead of weekends
haggle on your hotel stay if they have lots of rooms available
bring your own car snacks
split entrees at restaurants for dinner
go for lunch at the more expensive restaurants
find free entertainment
go to the info booth whereever you are and ask for coupons and information
at casinos make sure to sign up for their players cards

we stayed at 2 different hotel/casinos - Diamond Jacks and the Horseshoe

Our total for 2 nights was $146 including all taxes and fees

We signed up for players cards at each casino and at Diamond Jacks we received $10 each in free slot play for each of us and at the Horseshoe we received 2 buffet meals on each of our cards (we only used the ones on mine).

For cheap entertainment we went and walked around the Lousianna Boardwalk shopping area and we went to the Libby glass factory. We bought hubs a new pair of shades and me some glass stuff. We also went and the saw the new Star Trek Movie (awesome!)

We had a budget of $500 that we stuck to for the 3 days including lodging, food, shopping, entertainment and gambling.

This weeks Food Waste

Wow, has it really been a month since i have participated in food waste Friday??? I quit doing it for a couple weeks bc umm.. well I was embarrassed bc the couple of people who participated in the challenge all had like NO WASTE. But then Kristin did this post about how she was not as good at the beginning at doing no food waste AND how she was starting a blog roll of people who participated in food waste Fridays. And people came out of the wood works and they had WASTE and I did not have to feel as bad. So I am back. FOR GOOD!

I am pretty please with the reduction in food waste in our house.

This week we had:

Moldy strawberries, part of a can of cream of mushroom, and half a bowl of oatmeal.

WHY bother???

Kitchen Tip Tuesday- Freezing onions

I heart onions. My husband is ok with them as long as he can not see them. I am not very attention detailed so our conversations kind of go like this around dinner time.

him:

I don't mind that you put onions in the "dinner" but next time can you make them smaller. I like the taste but not the texture.

me:

Sure.

and then I don't. Probably slightly passive aggressive on my part because what "texture" does chopped onion have but more likely I just forget because I am A.D.D.

THEN finally after almost 3 years of marriage and 6 years of living together, I got a clue!

I have started grating the onion.

Ok, I know this post was about freezing onion. Well I got a bag on sale and they were going to go bad so I grated a mess of them and froze them in ice cube trays. Afterwards I popped them out and put them in a freezer bag. Tip: leave the hairy part on and the onion stays together as your grate- see picture to see the hairy part of the onion.

Now BOTH the wife and the hubs can be happy. and no more repetive conversations... well about onions that is.

This was done in 2 transactions and I received a $6 RR for each transaction but I will not "count" them until I use them.
Also I did use the rest of the money that I have been rolling on my Walgreens giftcard.
I am sad it is empty.
I have $25 in RR's to use in the next week or so and I plan to use them on some FAR items so I can get some more money on my card with out spending very much out of pocket.

New Shoes

I got some new shoes from the Kohls clearance rack.

1 pair of "interview" shoes (Dockers Brand) with very high heels for me.

I wore them around Kohls for 15 minutes to make sure they were comfortable.

Yes, that was me wearing the heels with the rolled up jeans clomping around with dirty tennis shoes in her hands.

The other pair are wedges... I have never owned wedges.

I think I like them.

They are pretty and summery.

Is "summery" a word??

This weeks food waste. Some mystery juice that was a starter from some bread and then I did not have enough flour so I put it in the fridge and then it smelled weird and I couldn't eat it, 1 pork chop and 2 different pastas.

Last weeks food waste, that never got posted... pasta tomato bake that was over cooked and kind of funky so it sat in leftover purgatory til I could get its picture and get it thrown in the trash. Makes me wish I had a dog. I bet he would eat it and LIKE IT.

Super Easy Lowfat Banana Chocolate Muffins

1 white cake mix
3 small/med bananas
3 egg whites
1 1/3 cup of water
3/4 cups chocolate pieces or chips
(I used chopped dark Hershey kisses because I got them for close to free after Valentines day at Walgreens with a coupon)

Follow cake mix directions (but no oil, instead add the bananas before beating!)- fold in chocolate, bake according to cake directions- pull out 2 minutes early. 24 servings - Around 125 calories per muffin and 2 grams of fat

Bottled Water

I read this story about how Coke and Pepsi are scared that because of the economy people will stop buying bottled water. The story was so-so but the comments that people left were highly thought provoking. Several people talked about the environmental concerns brought on by the sheer volume of non-recycled plastic bottles, to this some people pointed out that people buy cokes and mt. dews in plastic bottles all the time so why pick on people who drink water? That made me remember when you could still buy soda in glass bottles and cans and that was it. I wonder if it was costs or convenience that caused the plastic craze of today?? Probably costs: plastic is CHEAP. I hate plastic. I want to replace all the kid's plastic toys with wooden, all my plastic food containers with glass, and all of our plastic drinking bottles with metal ones.... that is my eventually goal. For right now I would settle with me remembering to take my cloth shopping bags with me when I go to the store.

I require outside motivation to clean sometimes.

Well probably all the time. I can not lie, I really HATE cleaning.

Especially when it comes to my

sewing/craft/coupon/computer/guest/storage/yardsale room.

It is MY room of everything and I LOVE it.

I have an everything room because my hubs is very neat and mess makes him itch so I get my own room for all my "projects".

(then I shut the door and he does not have to see MY MESS)

But my mess got out of control even for me.

My friend Megan and I decided to have a 24 challenge to see who could clean their everything rooms.

It turned into more of a 48 hour challenge because we are both:

moms to itty bitties, wives, AND students.

Now it is done and I think like it.

But I have to confess...a clean room always makes me want to make a mess.

FYI all the totes are filled with stuff for our upcoming Benton Area Moms Yardsale.

I am happy with our food waste for the week. I should have taken some pictures of inside the yogurt and dip, there was very little in the bottoms. The veggies in the yellow bowl were from a new frozen kind that had a weird cheese sauce- I thought I would save them and repurpose them but I just didn't get to it. The peas and beans just got shoved to the back and are actually more like food waste from 2 weeks ago!

Saving money on your grocery and household bills

When I started this journey last August our grocery and house stuff ran us between $400-$600 a month. Whittling the number down to $200-$250 a month (yes I go over sometimes :) ) has been a very gradual process as I have learned what works for my family needs.

Here are some of the things we do to save money on groceries.

buy meat on sale/cook/divide into meal portions/freeze
make our own breads/rolls/buns from scratch
use lots of coupons
eat more frozen veggies during the winter when fresh is SO EXPENSIVE
have meatless meals
use up our leftovers
stockpile when I can get something free or almost free
spices from whole foods bulk bins

Some things I would like to be doing

make more from scratch (healthier and cheaper)
start a garden
do once a month cooking
cook more beans

What we do to save on household stuff

Walgreens- learn the system and use it
Use washable rags/towels rather than paper towels
clean with vinegar, bleach or free stuff
use about 1/2 of the recommended amount of laundry detergent (Tide or All Free&Clear)
not be brand loyal (most of the time) - at least be open to trying something different, specially when you can get it for free.
Do what works for us- we tried using All free&clear for us like we do for the kid and hated it and went back to Tide for us
stock up when I can get stuff for free (some of the stuff you should never have to pay for: toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, hair products) or really cheap
newspaper instead of paper towels to clean mirrors and windows

Above all I think the best way to save money is to:

stick to the basics
look for ways to use something in multiple ways
do not autopilot to buy instead borrow/trade/make do without/make it yourself

I should have given some of it away before it expired... the cattleman's, green beans, and drink mixes we did not like...I have no idea what the grains were in the plastic containers, I bought them a long time ago at Wild Oats to experiment with and now I have no idea what they are... the jellos, I opened and used part for smoothies and they got clumpy ~ yuck ... the condiments were expired. I look at this picture and cringe and think "how wasteful and definitely not frugal!"

My goal from now on is to cut back on my food waste ~ my consciouses about food waste came from this blog.

I have been naughty.
This frugal girl has not been keeping track of her household spending AT ALL!
Since we do all of our spending through a credit card that we pay off each month it was easy enough to go back through and add up all of our purchases. I was happy with our grocery bills but very unhappy with how much we spent on eating out!

We budget $200 a month on groceries and household supplies and $120 a month on eating out.

I went over by $38.91 but I am really not surprised considering the great sales that Kroger was having and how much I got stocked up.

Eating Out- includes any food/drink item purchased not at a grocery store.

Ouch this was way higher than I thought it would be. I have got to start making Kirt's lunches again and having a better plan for our meals so I don't hit the easy button and get Kirt to pick up Subway on his way home.

Yes I know there is one more week in February but I have bought all my groceries through that time frame so the only that is going to be added is eating out.

I am very excited because with in a few days time I will be the proud owner of two oversized, rocker recliner chairs that swivel! Since I got pregnant with Jackson I have wanted an oversized rocker recliner and my hubs wanted one that swiveled. We looked and looked and sat and sat and never fell in love with one that we could afford. We looked at many furniture stores and on craiglist for MONTHS and NOTHING worked for us. Then a couple of days ago I found these on craigslist and went to check them out. We got both of the chairs for half the price of one! This is definitely one of those times when a good deal came to those that waited!

I can't make soup.

Soup just doesn't love me even though I HEART SOUP.

I can make yeast breads, muffins, cakes and all other matters of goodness from scratch, but my soup ALWAYS taste like poo.

Tonight's failure was some nice, hot, not so yummy bean and ham soup (even the kid turned up his little button nose to the beans and that boy LOVES beans).

I am putting up my white flag to the soup pot.

Don't worry we did not starve...remember I am crazy good at baking bread, I made buttermilk bread based on this recipe.

Kitchen Tip Tuesday- freezing lemon & lime juice

I bought some lemon and limes that were on manger's special 5/$1 with the intention of using them in some baked goods like pies or muffins.

I did not. Mostly because I think my booty does not need a pie or a muffin... this week.

Instead I researched online to see another way to store them and found out that "lemon and lime juice freeze beautifully"

To freeze:
Juice the lemons and limes, separately and put the juice in ice cube trays. Then if you are feeling adventurous zest the fruits and sprinkled the zest into the juice. After freezing, put the cubes into a freezer bag and squeezed out all of the air.

Two cubes is equivalent to about the juice of one small fruit.

My story of how I saved money today

I am in my final year of school for my masters in counseling.
I have to take a BIG test to get my license.
The test is very hard.
The test costs $200.
If I fail twice I have to wait 2 YEARS to take the test again.
In that time I CAN NOT be a therapist.

I HAVE TO PASS THE TEST!

So I asked everyone who came before how they got ready for said big test and they named books and cds that they used to study. In case you didnt know... the study guide business is BIG business. $50 for a book! More for the cds.

I have a child, I have been in college for 7 years, I am poor. Enough said.

I kept trying to figure out how to get ahold of something to study.

I looked on ebay and half.com and amazon.... I looked at my credit card and looked away.

Then I started calling people... and found 2 people willing to let me borrow the CD's!!!

Then tonight I went to my colleges library and on a whim looked and they had not one but two books on studying for the NCE (national counselor exam).

Today was a good day.

Frugal Recipe Resources

I have a secret addiction to recipes... well really probably not so secret to anyone who knows me.

I am also one of those people who does not really follow a recipe exactly, I just like to get new ideas when I browse. Not sticking exactly to a recipe also allows me to be truly frugal because I mix and substitute for what I have instead of running to the store for more ingredients.

Here are two of my favorite frugal recipe websites:

Miserly Moms - this one has large database of recipes that are submitted by people from all over the country... this is one that is entertaining because of the "interesting" submissions but there are also some good ones.

Hillbilly Housewife - this is my go to site for "from scratch" recipes

and while not a "frugal" website per say, my other favorite recipe site is Allrecipes.com
Great because people give the recipes ratings and because they have lots of "food porn".

Some pretty Valentine's food porn from allrecipes for your drooling pleasure.

Loadable Coupon Sites

If you have never tried a loadable coupon site before and you shop at Kroger then you are definitely missing out.

Couple of things about loadable coupons

They do not double.
They can be combined with a paper coupon (and preferably a sale for the best savings).
They come off automatically when you buy the product indicated.
If for some reason they do not come off you can contact each individual sites customer service and they will take care of the problem- Kroger can not help you and the cashier will have NO idea what you are talking about.
The coupon/discount does not come off in the normal place all the time, check the whole receipt.
The coupons usually take 1 hour to load on your card- I have always waited longer for the just in case factor, I do not like returning items or dealing with customer service.

Cellfire- good site, gives fewer coupons than the other sites and mostly has Kroger brand coupons.

****It says to use a cell phone number and it will send a text to verify. I DO NOT give out my cell phone number because I hate getting ad calls. I gave my old home phone number that is disconnected and then I just tried signing in and it worked.****

Disaster preparedness & Krogers!

It is COLD outside and yucky and we "might" get ice accumulations which in Arkansas means loss of power for an indeterminate amount of time. So today me and Jackson braved the cold to go to Home Depot because our grill was out of gas. Then we met up with Megan & Paxton to get some cheap groceries at Krogers. I love Benton's Kroger. They are always so helpful and they always let mothers with small children go in the 15 items or less line even when they have 10 million items. I went ahead and picked up some bottled water but only because it was on a managers special for 24/$2.50 for Ozarka Spring 16 ounce?? bottles.
Anywho! So now we have gas to cook with if the power goes, water to drink, and I made some rolls and a loaf of bread is currently in the breadmaker. Then I did the dishes and washed a load of towels. The baby is napping and life is GOOD!

So I was super excited to hear that we were getting a Mega Event at Kroger for the next two weeks. Unfortunately I could not see the ad til today!! and found out that some of our prices are higher than what people in other states are reporting, HOW RUDE! I was telling hubs that our mustard wasn't going to be FREE but rather .19 and he laughed at me! and said it is still only .19 for something we use. Well ya but, oh never mind... men just never get it!

Mega Event- Buy 10 participating items and get $5 off your bill (.50 off each item) - I am posting the price you will pay after the $5 comes off your bill. You can get up to $15 off each transaction if you buy 30 items. Also you can buy any combination of items as long as you get a total of 10, $5 will automatically come off your bill and this deal can be combined with coupons and loadable making some items FREE or pretty close to it!

But Renee, what ever will you do with all that cheese and sausage???? We have lots of social events and family events that we bring food to and then if there is still leftovers, sausage and cheese is good for quite a while and also freezes for up to 2 months.

I am so excited because Sunday morning I am going to go to KMart and get FREE STUFF because they are doing Super Doubles (Doubling Coupons up to $2 = up to $4 off!!) for a whole week! Benton Kroger Coupon Policies

Doubles up to $.65 (up to the price of the item- will not give overage)
Only doubles 8 like coupons at a time
Have lots of Catalina deals where you can buy so many of one item or brand and coupon will print for a dollar amount off your next order. You can buy the items with coupons!

Example of one I did before Christmas: Buy 8 philly cream cheeses and get $4 off your next order- I had coupons for $.50/2 which doubled, they were on sale for $1.25.

So 8 x $1.25 - 4 (.50 x 2) = $6 and then I received a $4 coupon for my next order making my 8 cream cheese cost $2- which was great for all the holiday cooking.

I have also received free yeast to make bread with this kind of offer.

Walgreens Basics

The Easy Saver Magazine is put out monthly, inside you will see all of the rebates for the month and there are also instant value coupons to cut. The Easy Saver can be found in paper form at the front of the store by the weekly ad papers. You can also view them online here.

Couple of things about coupons at Walgreens.

Walgreens coupons can be stacked (combined) with manufactures coupons.
Manufactures coupons need to be given to the cashier first before any Walgreens coupons to avoid beeping (when the register rejects a coupon).
You can use coupons to buy something you are going to get a Register Reward for.

Register Rewards: these are like cash to be used at Walgreens within a set amount of time- watch the expiration dates, it sucks if you don't notice and find it expired!

Once in a while they wont print (has not happen to me personally yet), have the manager re ring you up a another register if they still don't print- return your items and get your coupons back!
You can also write to the Catalina Company (they are the makers of the machine) and get your issues resolved that way.
Register Rewards cannot be used on the same deal to get the deal again. For example if Dove Shampoo is buy 2 get a $5 RR, I cannot turn around to use the $5 RR to buy more Dove and expect the RR to print again.
You can "roll" the RR into other deals by different makers or use them on FAR products.
You can only redeem 1 RR per transaction but you can do multiple transactions, just split your order up. (I actually try to not leave the store with a RR at all, I will make a plan so when I check out, I seperate my order- first I buy the stuff that will print out the RR and then I use the RR to pay for rest.)

Free After Rebate (FAR)- Walgreens puts out several items a month that are free after rebate- you can use a manufactures coupon on these and get the full sale price back, therefor you would make money on the FAR products.

Can be done online quickly and easily!
If you allow them to put the money on a Walgreens gift card they will add 10%, again making you money. (I have been shopping at Walgreens for the past few months and have very rarely needed anymore money out of pocket I just keep refilling the Walgreens card at the end of the month and then use that money for the current months deal
